About
“The Captain of Her Heart” is a song by the Swiss duo Double from their debut studio album, Blue (1985). The song is a ballad about a girl who stops waiting for her absent lover to return. The single was an international success, reaching No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, thus making Double the first Swiss act to reach the top 40 on the latter chart.
The duo band is composed of two artists Felix Haug (drums and keyboards) and Kurt Maloo (guitar and vocals) who appear twice (hence Double) in the album “Blue”. Their next album Dou3le released in 1987 failed to achieve the same success as their previous one, stalling at #71 in the UK. Due to musical differences, the two split but still remained friends. Kurt Maloo pursued a solo career while Felix Haug wrote music for films and advertising.
Reuniting in the late 1990s to record 9 new tracks, the project was postponed due to lack of material content for an album until 2003 – the band’s 20th anniversary. Felix Haug died shortly in May 1, 2004 due to a heart attack. Maloo carried the project forward and included them in his 2006 album “Loopy Avenue”.
Looking back at 1985 with the benefit of hindsight, it was a very interesting year.
The supergroup “USA for Africa” recorded the song “We Are The World”, “New York, New York” became the official anthem of New York City and Wham became the first western pop act to release an album in China.
Ronald Reagan, the 40th US President was inaugurated for a second term while Mikhail Gorbachev became the new Soviet leader. In March 26, 1985 Pope John Paul II proclaims the first ever World Youth Day.
Michael Jordan became Rookie of the Year while Gary Kasparov became the youngest ever to win the world chess championship at 22 years old over fellow Russian Anatoly Karpov.
James Bond film “View to a Kill” is the last to star Roger Moore, while the first sequel of Sci-Fi film “Back To The Future” starring Michael J. Fox was released.
Having witnessed all of these things happening around me as a young teenager makes me feel very fortunate to have lived during interesting times.
Lyrics
It was way past midnight
And she still couldn’t fall asleep
This night the dream was leavin’
She tried so hard to keep
And with the new day’s dawning
She felt it drift away
Not only for a cruise
Not only for a day
Too long ago
Too long apart
She couldn’t wait another day for
The captain of her heart
As the day came up she made a start
She stopped waiting another day for
The captain of her heartToo long ago
Too long apart
She couldn’t wait another day for
The captain of her heart
Too long ago
Too long apart
She couldn’t wait another day for
The captain of her heart
As the day came up
She made a stop
She stopped waiting another day for
The captain of her heart
Too long ago
Too long apart
She couldn’t wait another day for
The captain of her heart
